A group of Krags made for the director of Civilian Marksmanship Sale to National Rifle Association members by the Benician Arsenal in the 1920s possesses semi-martial collectability. This may be one of the rifles converted during the 1920's for the directors of Civilian Marksmanship as identified by Flayderman. Historical Significance: The serial number of this carbine indicates it is a shortened Model 1898 Krag rifle, with a Model 1899 carbine stock. The rifle is in excellent condition with smooth metal, few rust spots on the magazine door, strong case hardening colors on the breech.
The butt plate is unmarked and has a butt trap (empty). The stock is walnut and is the half stock style. The left side of the breech is marked US below is marked Model 1898. The front sight is not the regulation type for the M 1898 carbine, this arm has a sleeve mounted M 1903 type sight, and the rear sight is the Model 1902. The blued round barrel is 22 inches in length and is fastened by a single oval-clamping band, which also carries the upper sling swivel. Appears to have been a Model 1898 rifle, which was converted to a carbine (Only 3000 were converted).
